Replacing UPS battery

So I finally got around to pulling the battery from an old UPS of mine (it would start beeping and kill the power anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour after turning a computer on) and this will be the first time I replace one. Any suggestions/tips? It's a generic APC unit, 12V 7.2Ah battery inside. APC sells their own battery replacements but they're obviously overpriced.

I've found various battery retailers and there are tons available on Amazon - aside from buying one that's the right size and spec, are there any other considerations I should make?

Thanks...that paperweight's been sitting there for almost a year now, heh. About time I got around to it...

Nope, not really. You are fine as long as it will physically fit and has the same output voltage. You might have to splice the original connector onto the new battery, but that's no big deal.

EDIT: OK, I thought of one more thing. Make sure that you get a sealed cell and not an open one.

Just go to your local Batteries Plus and hand it to them. They will sell you the proper replacement, and recycle the old one. Online might be cheaper, but then there's shipping. Either way it will probably be cheaper than APC branded replacements.
