replacing the heatsink on the x1800xt

the saphire radeon x1800xt has a huge hs and from what people tell me is very loud.
Can you replace it? its not like some other heatsinks. If you can...which one should i get?
I've been told the vf700 is good and the vf900 is good but overpriced...

Yes you can, however experience with the vf900 on the high power ATI cards has been mixed. An X1800XT should be alright, but i'd be looking more at the arctic cooling X1 or X2 which ever is compatible.

Either one will be quieter than stock, but i think the AC one does a better job of cooling.

thanks, the x2 is compatible with the x1800xt but like the stock hs it takes up an extra slot...
no worrys though i'm not doing sli till i need it.

VF900 is capable of taking up only one slot but I would go with the Accelero X2 since it's cheaper and cools about as well.

would you go with the thermalright xp-90 for a cpu hs? I heard the freezer 64 is cheep how's it working out?

I would take the Freezer 64 Pro if you have enough space. It cools very well and from what I've seen, it does better than the XP-90. You can find the F64P for around 25USD at svc.com

Crack is bad for you.

To OP: I believe the Thermalright v-1 ultra is compatible and does not take up more than one slot below the video card but does take almost two above it. You have the same motherboard as I do so I can tell you, if you have a close to stock size heatsink it will work beautifully but, if you have something like the xp-120 or si-120 or one of the 120mm zalman coolers, it will not fit.

And as for cpu hsf it is hard to compare the performance of the xp-90 and the freezer 64 because they are completely different kinds of heatsinks. the xp-90 and the xp90c cool extremely well considering how small they are. the xp120 is what i use and i could never be happier. If you want to look into tower style hsf's then for the best cooling you have to go with scythe's ninja plus or noctua's n-hu 12. Thermalright also makes a couple of tower heatsinks but, they're not quite as good and the scythe or noctua.

ninja it waaay good... keeps a64 at low 40's with 1.6v with a 70mm fan from a stock a64 hsf on slow blowing through it... and it looks too crazy...

I slapped a VF900 on my 1800xt which I flashed to a PE, it is awesome. The benefit is that your computer won't sound like a jet engine, which makes it worth every penny. Every review I've seen has sung the praises of the VF900, and my personal experience affirms.

well the xp-90c will cool almost identically to an xp-120 when equipped with the right fan where as the xp-90 is ~10% at load. Not an excessive difference but noticable, yeah.
