Yes you can, however experience with the vf900 on the high power ATI cards has been mixed. An X1800XT should be alright, but i'd be looking more at the arctic cooling X1 or X2 which ever is compatible.
Either one will be quieter than stock, but i think the AC one does a better job of cooling.
