Replacing text in Word

Does anyone know how to replace a character with something else in Microsoft Word? I'm trying to replace a box with some parenthesis, so I highlight the box and copy it, but when I go to paste it in the replace field, it copies over some wierd character thing. So does anyone know how I might go about doing this?

All a character is is a number really... Are you sure it's not a font issue?

Try replacing whatever you paste in with the parentesis and it might work.

the charectar you are trying to replace it with might not be the same in the default font that word uses. Check out the charectar map. Try replacing it with what you think the correct charectar is. Worst comes to worst, undo it.

When you paste the text, do it this way:
Edit-paste special-unformatted text.

What you are picking up is either some of the box formatting or part of a box formula. Some tables in word could be imported from excel, and they carry over the excel cell format.

i think what he meant was that I wanted to replace one symbol with another. Say, a copyright sign with a TM sign. When he tried to paste the TM into the replace dialog box, it would show as a different charectar.
