replacing rotors....

Well, I finally found the problem with my mom's Avalon. The problem worsened by a huge degree yesterday, the day before the car was going in the shop. While driving, I pressed the brakes, which has been making this rubbling sound as of late, and right after I come to a complete stop, I feel a jolt, and I thought my shocks gave away because I felt the car droop down a little. After that, the rubbling sounds got really loud and this tim eyou can actually hear metal rubbing from the outside, even when i juts push the gas. Anyways, The guy at the shop said I needed new rotors and that one of the brake pads were on the verge of falling off. The cost to repair...$450! You think this guy is charging me too much to change the rotor and pads? I dont understand how I even need new brake pads since they were changed about 6 or 7 months ago. Brakes usually last about a year for my mom and I.

Sounds more like a bad caliper to me. When they go bad they can wear out a roter/pad really quick.

I should be able to get excellent front pads/rotors for my car ('98 Corolla..front disc, rear drum) for well under $200..and they're not that hard to install.

Sounds like a rip off to me, is this the same place that did the install 6 months ago? if so go somewhere else!!!

It could be a bad driver too. When they go bad, they can wear out a roter/pad really quick. 😉

Also, cheaper parts on heavier cars will wear more quickly.

dunno bout the avalon but i used to buy rotors for an old T-bird i had for about 50-70 USD each. then pads are another 50 or so. IMO 450 sounds a little high but then again they do have to make some money on labor

If it's a Midas or similar chain, it is a rip off, so go somewhere else. Always and forever. Auto repair chains, as a group, suck. Cheap parts (their cost, not yours), cheap labor (their cost, not yours), and sales/profit/growth driven = bad for customers.

What specifically is he replacing? Just rotors and pads? or is he replacing the calipers too? If you just got new stuff pu on less than a year ago, there's probably more wrong and that might be why it's costing so much. $450 is way too high for just rotors and pads. Also, is he replacing all 4, or just the front?
