Replacing RAID 0 or 1?

I'm helping my friend fix his LACIE Big Drive which is essentially 2 1 TB drives runin either Raid 0 or 1. I suspect the drive controller is what is busted, but I'm not sure if there is some way to get to the data without the controller. Is there some way to replace the Raid controller with a Raid card or use software Raid?
Also I've got to thinking about my own Raid 0 setup. If I were to move my 2 hard drives to another computer would they still be able to access the data? Does it matter what OS or motherboard I use in the new computer? Any help would be appreciated since I haven't dealt with these issues before.

This is one of the disadvantages of hardware raid. if the controller craps out, you are pretty much screwed. Now depending on the controller and how it stores its settings you MIGHT be able to try to find the same one, or one that uses the same "protocol" create a raid with 2 separate drives, then put the existing drives and hope it picks them up. Not a guarantee though.
