Replacing NT 4.0 Server with Win2K Server

I need to replace the single server in a Domain with a new computer running Win2K Server. I have the Win2K Server in the Domain now as a member server. As I understand it, this should be what I need to do to be able to take out the NT 4.0 Server. Run DCPROMO to make the Win2K Server a Domain Controller. Make sure the Domain does a Domain Synch. Demote the NT 4.0 Server from Primary Domain Controller to Backup Domain Controller.

Is this correct?
 
There are alot of things you need to get Active Directory running properly - mainly having a W2K server running DNS. There are many technotes on Microsoft's website on doing this but getting your DNS setup properly is key. (Not using your ISP's DNS, etc.)

 
You can't do what you suggest.

NT 4.0 Domain IS_NOT_EQUAL_TO Active Directory Domain (W2K Domain).
You cannot just promote an NT4 domain to a W2K domain, you have to create a new W2K domain, and then migrate your users to it. If you only have a single domain controller, you shouldn't have that many users.

Read the W2K AD doc (there's a LOT of it).
Rule #1: You must have a fully functional DNS server for Active Directory to work.
Rule #2: You must have a fully functional DNS server for Active Directory to work.
