Replacing heatsink

I'm taking off the current heatsink i have on my 3200 newcastle so i can OC.

-I currently have a coolermaster basic HS and fan and it came with one of those preinstalled pads.

Question:
Am I gonna have any problems removing this pad from the CPU. Will it leave any un-removable residue or wax on it. I'm planning on using arctic silver, an the surfaces need to be really clean

Well, usually, they say twist the heatsink so the CPU doesn't come out with it.
The only danger (I think) is if you have a socket A. Some guy said he ruined the core by twisting the heatsink on his socket A.

I'd recommend running the cpu for a bit before removing the heatsink because the temperature will make the thermal pad a bit softer. You will need alcohol (90% or better is recommended) to remove the residue, but a credit card (or something with a straight edge that does not leave grooves on the IHS) could be useful if you have a lot of residue.

No. You just need some isoprophyl alcohol (70% and up) and a lint free cloth (or a tissue that doesnt leave particles).

thanks guys. i just thought those pads have some kind of wax that is un removable. Thought i was screwed. What about once i put on the artic silver? Is that removable from the cpu?

Yeah, but it gets pretty solid, so you have to give it a little twist before pulling on the CPU or you'll pull the CPU out of the socket... which no fun.

Before removing the heatsink, twist it ever very slighty to prevent the HSF from ripping out the CPU completely from the socket.

how long have u been running on the basic thermal pad? i would be curious to see what temp differences you see with your AS5....

BTW, nice rig! 🙂

i'll proably switch it next week. ONly been running the system two weeks. My system is as low budget as i could get. I got every single part on sale, way below for what they usually go for. I'll post updates when i get em.

I agree run the processor for a bit before you take it off. I was moving my hardware into a new case and I made the mistake of taking the stock heatsink with a thermal pad off last so I couldnt run it to loosen it up to put my waterblock on, it took some force but there was no damage thankfully.

Some times a Knife like a butter knife can be used as leverage to get the HSF off. If you have to tear the HSF off then pull directly up, less chance of bending pins.

3dmark05 got me a 5189 score with OC on vidcard and stock processor. x800xl cock/mem 425/526
