replacing HD4850

I'm looking to replace my HD4850 with one of the new AMD ATI cards coming out later this month. I'm interested in a card with graphic performance comparable to the HD4850, but that uses less power, and throws off less heat.

Suggestions?

Since those new ATI cards are not out, it is impossible to tell you which of them to get. Wait until Sept 10th for the pre-launch event. Pricing and additional information will be provided then.

Cross your fingers for another 8 days for part info. Don't expect them in retail channels until around the 24th however. The low power cards have really been low key on the rumor front so there really isn't even much speculation we can toss your way.

The HD4770 is close to the 4850's performance, but ultimately slower. It does use less power and should produce less heat. As for the new cards, nobody knows yet.

That would be a 4770, but it's a bit pointless in your situation.

Only two cards have been confirmed with benchmarks available. The slower of the two, HD5850, is like twice as fast as your HD4850. 27W idle. 160W max load. Heat looks fine too, 40-ish C at idle or something.

Nothing comparable in performance to a HD4850 has been officially announced. Haven't heard any rumors about a HD57xx either. Though you can be pretty sure lower cards from the HD5xxx series will show up.

What is the official heat of the HD4850 at idle?

Look into HD5750 512 MB when that comes out. According to leaked slides it is supposed to be $109 retail.

Same processing power as HD4850, 15% more bandwidth, cooler, quieter, less power usage, DX11.

Yeah, 5750, although we're still several days away from the launch, and who knows how long it will take to get decent supply and choice.

Check out the 5750 in AT's review, it's pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Lower power, quieter, lower heat and competetive performance vs. 4850.

Graphics processing power is the same but 5750 has more memory bandwidth, power usage is significantly reduced also. I'm sure 5750 has way more overclocking headroom too.

5770 is almost as good as 4870 1 GB and somewhat better than 4870 512 MB.

In DX11 I'm sure it will definitely beat 4870 and probably 4890 (running in DX9 or DX10.x). DX11 coding is supposed to be more efficient than DX9 or DX10.x.

5770 beats the 4850 in all of the categories you mentioned considerably more performance

a bit lower power usage ~30 watts
and its considerably cooler

but it's generally slower than the 4870 1gb and more expensive

57xx series is a bit of a mixed bag IMO

If ATI released the $109 5750 512MB it would definitely obsolete sales of 4850 512MB.

They must be waiting for old stock to clear out.

I don't see the 5770 as a worthy replacement for a 4850, performance wise. I'm waiting for the 5850 to drop a bit in price to get one, now that's a performance improvement and while it draws more power under load, at idle, which will be most of the time for most users, it draws less than a 4850.
