$489 to replace rotors and brake pads for the front brakes. My backside is majorly sore.
wtf do you drive, a Maybach?
if he did all 4 brakes, then that isn't bad
1997 Toyota 4Runner. Apparently these only have front brakes.
ORLY?
lol, my friend, you have more to learn about brakes. go look behind your rear wheels, see that odd colored round thing thats ribbed on the outside? inside that is your rear brakes
if they are Drums in the rear, there is no way a first timer is going to easily do these.
Only cost me $200 and change for front pads + rotors + labor and all taxes included on my 2004 Subaru.Get ready to grab the KY!! It's insane for all the Japanese cars/trucks. My friend's wife had a Subaru and a few years ago, he and I decide to do the brakes on it, and on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. We go to one parts store and I get two front rotors, pads, shoes for the back brakes, and some of that goop that stops brake squeal. I think it was about 85 bucks all together. He goes up and gets pretty much the same parts, and it was almost exactly 3 times as much, and that was for relined pads, versus my new ones. Not long after we did the brakes, the motor spun a bearing, and he bought her a Mitsu Eclipse. The parts weren't as bad as on the Subaru, but were still high.

I am a city boy. I know nothing about fixing cars. Not even changing oil. I pay $12.50 to change it.

Factory labor time to R&R front brake pads is 1.1 hrs for a 97 4Runner. To R&R the front rotors is an additional 0.9 hrs. To "turn" the rotors is an additional 0.4 hrs each (which I wouldn't recommend to anybody).
Dealer Price for pads (part# 0446535240) is $43.68.
Dealer Price for rotors (part# 4351204020 without 16" rims) is $95.77 ea
Dealer Price for rotors (part# 4351235210 with 16" rims) is $91.57 ea
My repair database software is flaky - I'm not sure (while not at work) if those prices are jobber or list. They might be 25% more than that.
Regardless, the only way I can make it equal $489 is with about a $97/hr labor rate (assuming the higher parts prices). Of course there's also all those bogus EPA charges they like to throw in as well...
I swear dealerships are just out to rape people.
