Subject AGP card is in an old machine I want to give to the kids and it's on the out (freezes after a few minutes use).

Need a replacement AGP card that's as fast/faster...

Any suggestions for in something that won't break the bank? One would think a similar AGP card would be less than $100 but haven't been able to find one...

My advice is not to spend any more money into that machine ... I'd save some money and get something like this for ~ $220, combine it with your old case, psu, hdd's and optical drive, then get a new psu later on.

edit: the $220 price tag is without rebate, so $200 is more like it.

You might check out something like this:

The fastest AGP cards are the 3850 and the 4670, but the one I listed is probably half the price of those two cards and it should still have enough power to play anything you could have played on a 6800 Ultra.

Agreed - this should work well and provide sufficient performance without costing too much. Old computers work just fine for web surfing and the like - no need to build a new computer. I have an old Dell that I'm using for that, and I've replaced the AGP video card twice already, and don't feel like it was a waste at all. The computer runs great for what it's used for.
