No complaints. But I am also a photographer newb, so I'm no expert.

But yeah, I haven't had any problems with my s60 yet.

Oh and the manual controls are really nice!

I've never been a fan of the S40/S50/S60 line.

Not that much smaller and a lot worse picture quality than the "G" line. Not a signifant number of extra features for the money over the "A" line. A lot bigger than the "elph" line. What's the need for it?

If you want the best quality go with the "G".
You want uncompromised size go with the Elph.
You want value go with the "A".

There's no need for the S line.

That's just me though.

Thanks for all the great advice. You guys rock.

The main differences between the two is that the V3 is faster, more responsive, has laser night auto focus, infared view, and most importantly (IMHO) the video is MUCH better. Plus it accepts 2 different media: compact flash and memory stick. The new processor also is supposed to be the most accurate for colors.

I'm in the same boat as you and I'm going to purchase the Sony V3 or Pentax 750. Both would be exceptional buys.........I'm wary of the lens for the Pentax 555 though, which has reliability issues which probably could transfer over to the 750--both use this same lens element.

Yes, the more I think about it, the more I think the V3 is IT.

V3 is a better camera than the G6. Good more features. Picture-wise, the Sonys have less purple fringing than Canons. BTW, PF is a b!tch to get out with software in post-processing!! The G6 has crap video resolution with frame rate resolution and time limits. The Sony obliterates the Canon in this regard. G6 is also sluggish vs V3. This is essential for candids!

Instead of having the G6 in contention, you should consider the Pentax Optio 750. It's fully manual and it's lens has been raved as better than Canon (the Optio 555 has received top rating scores just about everywhere). The fact that it's pocketable and has a flip LCD is just cherry on the cake. The 750 also has much better video abilities than the G6. Also have 5x zoom.

For me, I'll buy and test both the 750 and V3. Most likely I'll be happy with both. My wife will prolly have to decide for us. ;)

The V3 does look nice, but it's got a really wimpy flash compared to the G6, and a 10cm macro focus versus 5cm with the G6.

Hmm, decisions, decisions...

You might want to specify that the amount in the topic summary is stated in hoser-dollars.

Edit: Approximately $550 in USD, for those making suggestions.

HAHA. Actually, I was aiming at a $700 USD budget.

If memory serves, Nikon makes a digital SLR that can use some of their 35mm SLR lenses. You might be able to get one refurb or on E-bay for 700$. That way, you could save money on lenses, and get a better camera.
Aside from that, I put in a vote for the Cannon PowerShot Gx. My dad has a PowerShot G2 that does everything he needs, which is a lot, considering the fact that he's a landscape painter and takes pictures of what he paints. The software works well enough on a PIII-700 or a above (we're using a PIII-500) and is pretty stable.
Remember to budget in an enormus CF card, as you'll most likely not get too many shots on a small one. 256mb is a minimum for what you want to do, methinks. Also, look for a high-speed CF reader (FireWire or USB2), as it can greatly boost the speed at which you can get photos off the card.
