Replacing a 27" SDTV in the bedroom

I'm looking for a replacement for a 27" sdtv. It'll only be SD content for now (SD DirecTV and the occasional DVD) - 1080 isn't important to me.

A thin set is critical; the current set takes up most of the top of the dresser and we're looking to reclaim that (possibly even wall mount?). Also, cost is important. A quick look tells me I'm probably looking at $400+ but I'd rather not go much higher than that if I can help it.

Thoughts?

The problem is you need a 'thin' tv but watch SD content. No LCD for about $400 is gonna give you a better or even bigger picture than your current tv. You could get a cheap 32" LCD for $400-$500 but your PQ will suffer.

edit: I would begin the search at Target or Walmart for some inexpensive LCDs.

What price range am I looking at for a basic, quality 32"? Are any of the bigger-name brands going to perform more or less identically at that size? I think 720p is more than sufficient for me...

On the "thin" descriptor... mostly I'm just after something other than a tube - and DLP is out too unless it's gotten thinner since I last looked.

I think most 32" LCD's are gonna be about the same in the $400 range. I think you probably have to spend a lot more to get a high quality tv/signal processor to get CRT quality on a LCD. I think Baked may have a good suggestion. I would recommend AVSforum even though the info can be overwhelming.

The egg had some 42" 1080P lcd HDTV for 500 and 600. Some company I never heard of. Carion, or something like that. Pretty thin looking.
