Since Googling "Pro Dynamics speakers" returns mostly links to "two guys in a white van selling speakers", I would guess that Alpine automotive speakers would likely be an improvement on the originals.

Lol, true, but he needs to be careful of the impedance. Those car audio ones are 4 ohm drivers. His home theater amp might not be able to handle 4 Ohms.

You can't just replace a driver with any other and expect it to work. It can sound VERY bad in fact depending on how bad the match is.

Sadly, the spec on the "studio monitors" is already 4 Ohms, so nothing would change.
Those Alpines are cheap, might as well go for it.
Give us more details on the speakers, nothing can be found by googling except people pissed off about buying White Van speakers.

Studio monitor or sound reinforcement not both!

White van guys. Funny the white vans have guys hawking cheesy speakers and the black vans have guys watching your downloads behind your back. ;)

The speaker probably uses some generic paper or poly cone midrange speaker. Don't use a woofer with an open basket as it will share compliance with the speaker's main woofer and that will give your midrange some serious doppler distortion! The speaker may say 4OHMS but the drivers may be 8OHM actual in parallel with an 8OHM tweeter and the capacitor inline to block the lows out of the tweeter keeps the load reasonably tame to your receiver.

Can't get much worse as they probably didn't "match" in the first place since they are white van. Perhaps, the 4" midrange drivers were there just for looks and are not even wired properly. :D

oh they worked great when they worked well. I sent from a GX3 all low freq., stupidly to one speaker set, and this set happened to be it, dmg'ing the midrange 4" speaker.

doesn't sound whole anymore.
