replacement ps3 hdd caddy?

So after fighting bitterly with the ps3 hdd caddy yesterday, stripping all the screws and bending it in frustration...is there any way to get a new one somewhere?
 
Ive seen alot of people strip all the scews on the caddy, why is that?

Call sony. they should be able to send you out a caddy no problem.

Similar incident happened to me... I was able to get a friend to drill out the screws I stripped and then found some suitable replacements at a hardware store.

I doubt you will be able to find the caddy anywhere but I believe Sony may be able to ship you a replacement caddy for a small fee.

If you really want to play your ps3, you can get the hard drive to stay in without the caddy but I wouldn't recommend it as a long term solution. 🙂
 
yeah the screws they made have to be part play-doh. One failed attempt = stripped.

I do have it in there with no caddy (and i cant reuse it since i basically destroyed it) so I'll see what sony has to say.

(The caddy is the metal plate thing that the hdd is screwed into)
 
I accidentally chucked mine across the room trying to pry the HD from its evil grip. Unfortunately the HD went with it.
 
I stripped all but one of the screws, and then I misplaced the least-stripped screw... in the end, I just barely put the screws back in--far enough to secure the HDD but loose enough that I could unscrew it without a screwdriver if I wanted to.
 
just like to comment on replacing the hd in the ps3. mine's a UK one with a 40g hard drive. noticed the caddy is different from the one ive seen on youtube etc. screws in the caddy were really tight, but do come off, just had to apply alot of pressure. had to use a much smaller screwdriver than i thought.

as a side note, the old drive is a seagate (not a momentus) which states its not suitable for laptops. which is slightly worrying, as my new drive is WD Scorpio 320G, which arrives tomorrow.

i hope these stories, that the 40G PS3's are not upgradeable, are not true..
 
well I'm using a new hitachi 320gb drive now and it seems to be working fine. I just need to devise a way to stabilize it in there, right now im using some balled up duct tape 🙂

All screws are super tight. The PS3 uses a 2.5" SATA HDD, which are the same thing as laptop HDDs. The Playstation HDD you have might be unsuitable for laptop use because of a low cache (mine was 2mb).

Why do you want to use your PS3 hdd in a laptop?

All laptops I've used have been PATA, not SATA.

 
just a little update. installed my new hard drive without issue, but when i switched my ps3 (40Gb) on i was expecting the system to format the drive and off i go. but instead i got a notice saying system cannot be started, insert media that contains data of version 2.36.

following instruction from the manual, i had to download the lastest firmware via my pc, burn it to disk and pop it in the ps3. which i couldnt manage to do (because im stupid) even with nero. so ive had to buy a usb flash drive just to install the update.

everything seems to working fine now, but im a little annoyed. Ive bought a WD Scorpio 320GB sata drive, and i know the ps3 will only recognise 290GB or so, but i only had around 260GB available when i checked. no games or videos or saved files. ive lost 30Gb somewhere.

anyway, just to confirm the 40gb PS3's are upgradeable

It reserves a percentage of the HDD space for system/game use. I think some people figured around 12% or so.
