Replacement Fan/heatsink for PIII550E on P3V4X, Suggestions?

I'd like to get my CPU temp down a bit while OC'ing my PIII 550E to 733 mhz and possibly more. Currently getting up to 55 degrees C. Here is a fan/heatsink I found:

Golden Orb Socket7/370 HO HS/Fan @ US$ 14.00

Any good? I'd like something economical and easy to install.

Early on I removed my stock retail heatsink, reapplied some thermal compound from Radio Shack, and put it back. Been working ok giving temps in the mid-40s mostly up to now.

Need a good economical air cooling solution. Thanx

You know my recommendation. The taisol unit outperforms the Gorb, and if you can get in on a group deal, it is cheaper, too.

You did mention something about mods to the clip or something which concerned me... Explain a bit more if you would please... If it is similarly priced and performs better, easy to install, then it sounds like a no brainer. Where can I order on from?

check hte hot deals forum for a group purchase on it.

To mod the clip, i used a pair of needle nose pliers and did about 1/8th inch of an unbend to the clip. It reduces clip pressure, making it much easier to install. Besides, p3's don't require the same kind of clip pressure that AMD chips require.

It does perform better than a golden orb(not to mention, it can match the overclocked speed I get with an alpha, something I can't do with the gorb).

Thanks!

BTW, I have a tube of thermal compound from Radio Shack... is that fine to use when replacing the HSF? Or do you strongly recommend another compound? Also, is there any recommendation for removing the old compound? It looked like a white pad soft thermal pad or something.

BTW, running at stock 550 mhz right now and temp showing at 35 degrees C

rubbing alcohol/degreaser should get rid of the old pad...

If you don't plan on removing the taisol unit once it is installed, keep the default thermal pad on there.. Just remove the blue sticker/cover on it. That stuff will outperform RS grease.

Thanx... I was hoping I wouldn't have to put out another $14 for a tube of Arctic Silver for one application, maybe two. There was a pad on the original retail heatsink which I left in place, but added a bit of thermal grease to make sure when I removed it and put it back.

Hopefully seating and clipping on the Tiasol unit won't be too tricky.

Mikewarrior2, One more thing... I checked the Hotdeals and only one reference came up for the Taisol HSF. It was listed to be used with AMD processors. Is that Taisol also good for PIII 550E FC-PGA Coppermine processors? Mine is on a MSI Master V2 "slocket" adaptor on an ASUS P3V4X mobo.

Here is what was listed:

TAISOL CEK733092

Price $11.30 (Taisol's Store Price, not the group buy price.)
Cheaper if bought in bulks.

SocketA/462 PGA Athlon Thermal Solution
* Approved & recommended by AMD for Athlon(Thunderbird) and Duron.
* Cools processors up to 1.2 GHz.
* Compact design w/ high speed 2 ball-bearing fan.
* Proprietary clip design(approved by AMD.) allows easy attachment and the proper amount of force for contact.

that's the right heatsink...

since you have a slotket, it should be fairly easy to loosen the clip and test it out. just take a pair of pliers to the clip, remove about 1/8th of an inch off the bend, and test it out(without removing the blue tab) on your slotket + cpu. If it fits, remove the blue tab, install it,

and remember to heat up your cpu to get the PCTC to "melt" and fill any microgaps between cpu/heatsink.

I haven't yet placed my order... I notice the thread in the GHF about noisy computers and all the discussion on fans. I do want to get an economical fan which works alot better than my stock fan. What can you say about noise? Is the Taisol reasonably quiet, moderately so or noisy?

Reasonably quiet. It is probably the quietest fan in my case, and all my fans are panaflo l1A series, plus an Enermax Power Supply. With the exception of the 80mm l1A, it does seem a tad louder than those guys.(the 80mm l1a is rated 24dB)
