Replacement AG- Dana Boente

Since an AG is far more than just The Ban, I thought this deserved a separate thread.

He's an interesting candidate in that while Trump picked him he's known to have been involved in very powerful people being taken down, the Republican gov of Virginia, a Republican.

Immigration notwithstanding it may be that he's another Mattis, someone who will do his job as it relates to Presidential policy until it comes to the point that it becomes legally unsupportable.

Thoughts?

And he was an Obama appointee. That should get a few peoples panties in a bunch. But it's just a couple days. Whole thing is moot.

I don't have an informed opinion of him. I suspect he got picked because he was local and could be on the job more or less instantly. Like ^^ said, it's only for a couple days, barring a filibuster on Sessions.

I'm hoping for a real "bread and circus" performance on Sessions. Maybe getting rid of the filibuster would have been a bad thing?

I find it interesting that the White House skipped the order of hierarchy to pick Mr. Boente.

probably along the same lines as you. Interesting, appears to be an upfront kind of guy, Obama appointee, one who is focused on enforcing the law regardless of party or stature of person

Was going to post this as well. Something like at least 3 were above him in the order. Makes you wonder ... Did they ignore order due to ignorance, or did they follow and the three told them where to go? Both likely scenarios given the admin's demonstrated capabilities.

Also notable, there is no one to grant/approve FISA requests. Has to be a senate confirmed member of the DoJ.

The order of succession for AG is given by executive order. The last two signed by Obama are linked below.

Dana Boente, as US attorney for Eastern District of Virginia, would be first in line under the 2010 EO. The most likely scenario is someone forgot about the EO that was signed as Obama was leaving office and went with the one that was in place for most of Obama's term. Also 2c basically allows the president to appoint whoever they want.
