Replaced 9500 GS with 9800 GT, now only getting intermittent fans

Hi,

I'm trying to replace the stock 9500 GS on an HP Pavilion Elite m9425f with a working 9800 GT. I uninstalled the original drivers, powered down the machine, and replaced the card.

Now, powering up the PC only gets the fans to spin for a few seconds intermittently, without any boot procedures or video output. I've tried re-installing the original card and have made sure that we didn't disconnect anything in the process, but am still getting the same issue.

Any ideas or experience with this model? I don't have a dxdiag on hand but here are the stock specs: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsuppor...d=3794173&prodTypeId=12454&objectID=c01549581

Thanks very much, any help appreciated.

Check your ram to see if it has came unseated. flip-flop ram sticks around, etc. Bad or loose memory can cause this.

Is the stock power supply sufficient for the new card?

I believe that it is. I ran the 9800 GT on another rig with the same wattage, but I'm not sure about the voltage on the new PSU's rails.

In any case, it still didn't work when I re-installed the original video card.

Checked the RAM, and it's solid. I'm not sure about the PSU, but will check it out.

Any other suggestions?

I took the PC to a technician, and we tried a bunch of different things, including a new PSU, to the same effect. He thinks it might be a mobo problem.

When we opened the case, we did find a loose jumper, and tried it on the only available BIOS (or CMOS, not sure) position, which didn't make a difference.

Is there another place the jumper could be missing from that would mess with the boot-up sequence, or is it a mobo issue?

Thanks again for any help!

A missing jumper would still let you post in 99% cases. Prolly the mobo gone bad. And if you're going to shell out for a new one, come back here. Unless you want to get a junk mobo ;-p

Well 350w might not be enough for the 9800GT it takes a lot of power as did its predecesor the 2xx series. I mean you need a free 200 watts for the video card and proper ampage. Its not your system as it worked with the 9500. Buy a 450w PSU from egg or something and your set.. You connected power to it with PCIe power from PSU ? If not its probably not gonna work. Buy a PSU that has PCIe connector and your set.. gl

Yeah, we tried it with a 450W PSU and had the same problem, and even after re-installing the 9500 GS were having the same issue.

I figured out the issue. The IPIBL-LB (Benicia) mobo has an SPI header that requires a jumper on pins 1-2 (visible here: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c01324212).

I had to reshuffle the RAM around because I don't think the technician replaced them in their original configuration when we were troubleshooting. I was getting two long beeps after replacing the jumper, but after replacing the RAM properly, it worked!

I've installed the 9800 GT and it's working fine; I just have a follow-up question: the 9800 GT requires a 400W PSU with 26A on the 12V rails. The stock PSU that I'm running is a max 350W with a combined 36A on split 12V rails (18A on 12Va and 18A on 12Vb). It seems to be working fine; how can I know if the new GPU is drawing too much power on the PSU?

Thanks everyone for the help!
