replace Throttle Position Sensor?

either there is a short/open circuit, or the TPS unit is gone....
which case is more likely to occur? (I don't have the electronic skill to test the first case)

my car is, 1996 Celica. 1.8L 7A-FE

thats the TPS testing procedure for my truck, all TP sensors do the same thing so you should be able to figure out the wiring on yours from that. the TPS isn't anymore than a bigass POT bolted to your throttle plate. so it should react the same way as any other POT on a meter. if its not your meter try not to blow it up. if you have the choice grab an analog one. there easier to read in situations like this.
