Replace Stock Cooling?

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to know what ppl think about replacing the stock cooling on a A64 3700 San diego I just ordered. I have a well ventilated case and I do plan to OC in the future, if not right away. Also I would appreciate any suggestions for the replacements. I dont care about fan noise etc. The coolest(not the quietest or costliest) - would be the best for me.

My specs:
A64 3700 San Diego
ASRock 939 Dual
1 gig OCZ RAM

Welcome new guy 🙂

On eBay the retail AMD 4piper HS can be had for $15 shipped. For $15 it's a very good
HS at a VG price. There still might be some avalible.

XP-90 retail comes w/fan for around $30.
AC 64Pro is a better HS than the XP-90 it blows to the rear of the case, rather than down
at the mainboard.
SI-120 fits all current boards and chips=VG HS.
Scythe Ninja is a tower sink much larger than the 64Pro, it is one of the be$t.

Read some of the stickied reviews at the top of this page. Only you know your board type,
case type, air flow set-up and your mean$.

Might also want to try getting the Sunbeam Tuniq Tower 120 which has an embedded 120 mm and 3 heatpipes. It's a huge sink though.

If you aren't finding the stock cooler too loud and it cools decently, you don't need a better cooler. If planning to OC, get the Freezer 64 Pro. It's one amazing sink even at 1350 RPM.

Second that AMD retail 4 piper, too bad they are harder to find now. It seems the price has gone up and they're now priced about the same(with shipping) as a AC 64 Pro. AC 64 Pro FTW 😉.

Actually I have not put it together yet. I am still waiting for some components. Newegg shipping is not what it used to be.

Thanks guys,
Appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. After having looked at the various options, I think I'm gonna go with the AC 64 pro. Hopefully it will fit my setup. Although I am little worried since I have ordered the ASRock MB, which isnt the biggest or the most ergonomic around. I did it more out of coersion since I didnt want to throw out my ATI 9800 yet.
Since this is my first build from scratch... I have another silly question. It's probably been answered multiple times before. Do I remove the thermal compound already applied to the processor and replace it with AC... if yes, how(do I have to get some removal compound)? I do have a tube of arctic silver, but I am just wondering how to go about it. If the answer is to detailed, please direct me to a source where I can find this info.

No, because there is no thermal compound pre-applied to the processor but i am sure you meant the one on the retail hsf.For instructions regarding how to apply AS5 see linky.
