Replace one router or add range extender?

Just looking for suggestions/advice.

My network consists of an older woreless SMC router (only used as wired though) connected to a linksys wireless G w/speedbooster. The SMC is in a network closet and the Linksys is centrally located in my house. No problems what so ever with low signals, etc.

The problem is every now and then the SMC gives me issue and I have to unplug it and the modem, shut down the pc and then turn them all on an plug them all in one by one while they snyc. Doesn't happen very often but always at an inconvienient time.

If I move the Linksys to the closet I may suffer a bit on the range so I just want to replace the SMC with another wired/wireless model or either put the linksys in the closet and put some kind of range extender where the linksys is currently.

Which solution would be better? If you have any other suggestions please let me know.

I'm assuming that you also have the cable/DSL modem in the closet. Why don't you run a line from the modem to the Linksys wireless router?

Yes, the modem is in there as well, along with the router and a switch.

I have about 7 drops throughout the house that feed back to the router so I need to keep it there.

You can move the newer wireless router into the closet and put an access point where the newer route is.

What is the difference in a range extender and an AP?

Can you recommend a particualr AP or are they all the same, generally?

For regular Home use there is No difference.

However most Access Points have extra Wireless modes that provide more flexibly in business environment, http://www.ezlan.net/APvsRoute.html

Since Access Points are mainly sold in the businesses environment and are more flexible they cost more than Wireless Cable/DSL Router.

You best bet would be to put the Linksys in the closet lay out a Cat6 cable to a good spot in the house and use this ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/...181218&Tpk=zyxel%2b550 ) as an Access Point.
