Replace my 1Ghz Thundy with a 1.8Gz Cel

Hi,
I have the opportunity to trade my Athlon Thunderbird 1Gz with a Celeron 1.8Ghz, no extra payment, just trading, I use my PC for gaming + 3D design (3Ds Max) so will the Celeron give me any performance boost? I mean which CPU is better for my case?

performance will be about the same i would personaly prefer the tbird. plus you can easily upgrade the socket to a much cheaper to a barton.

Looking at Tom's charts, I would say the celeron is considerably faster. I didn't look at every bench, though. Here is the link. There is a 1.7Ghz Willy Celeron in the benches.

Is it a socket 478 board? If so, you can put a p4 in later.

Tom's CPU benches

I know Celerons aren't all that great, but I'm thinking you'll see a definate difference from your 1ghz tbird. At least in regular Windows apps. Not sure how it'll perform in any games you might play.

As LTC8K6 said, if it's a 478 board it'll give you more room for upgrading the cpu in the future.

thats why i don't visit toms hardware anymore.

here are some REAL benchmarks for you to decide if its worth it or not:
bonk

edit: on a further note, its a trade, its a trade for a reason.your probably getting screwed by motherboard quality, ram or something of a sort.

Why not upgrade the CPU in your current system? Or get a AthlonXP and a KT600 board. Cheap but WAY faster then ANY celeron 🙂

My machine:
Celeron 2.4G @ 2.8G + GF2 GTS + 512 DDR400
-can't play C&C General, graphic can't be shown
- play CM03/04 at max database, 3 league is much better than my TB 1.1
- loading apps much faster than TB 1.1

Athlon TB 1.1G + GF2 GTS + 640 SDRAM PC133
- play C&C General quite well at low resolution
- play CM03/04 at max database, 3 league is very slooooooowww
- bit lag on loading apps

Both using WinXP Pro

There is no comparison to a 1Ghz T-Bird at that Anandtech link AWhackWhiteBoy, so I'm not sure how that is helpful. Yes, the celeron 1.8 is not very fast, but neither is a 1Ghz T-Bird.

Agreed. You can probably find an old XP1600 or XP1700 for $40... maybe $30 or less used. And get a cheapo motherboard... I just bought my aunt an MSI nForce2 IGP motherboard for $60. So for about $100 you could just about double the speed of your computer... assuming you have at least PC2100 RAM.

well considering that you are trading i think that the socket a board has more of a future with the intel one you will be more limited in upgradeability i think

I am confused 😕
Well, I am not buying a new CPU for a while, so I just wanna know if this Celeron will help me or not.
And if I get it, is it easy to overclock? And how far can I go with it? What about my T-Bird?
Thank you all for your opinions 🙂

edit: don't worry about any heat issues for overclocking cuz I have my case opened all the time.

Nah, of course I am getting a motherboard with it.

It's dad who offered giving me his CPU+Mobo, he has'em at his office, and he said if they give me more speed, I can take'em and give him my CPU+Mobo, so there's no cheating in this. He doesn't care for CPU speed, it's just an offer, and I am not willing to buy a new CPU until fall.
As for Anand link, looks like that 1.7 Cel performs very bad in Gaming and 3D rendering 🙁
So what do you suggest? And what about overclocking?

What are the two motherboards like? That may be a deciding factor. For instance, if the Celeron came with an ultra-modern 865PE chipset board or something...

Just comparing CPUs, 1.8 would be a NO. If it were a 2.0 (which is Northwood core) then you'd have much overclocking headroom and then I'd say yes.

I think we would need to know about the boards in question here.

For instance, if the Celly is in an intel board, you probably can't overclock it at all.

I would say overall that the 1.8Ghz Celly is considerably faster than a 1Ghz T-Bird.

I don't even think it's much of a contest.

Mine is E-Pox 8KTA3L+, but I gotta check the other one (celeron's) I'll tell you when I find out. But I don't think it's a good one.
Looks like I will stick with my 2+ years old CPU until fall, thank you very much guys.
Just a little question, is my thundy good for overclocking? How do I overclock it (how do I check if it's locked)? And how far can I go with it?
Thanks again

My apps are Games and 3D apps, and depending on Anandtech's benches, I found out that the Celeron is too weak in games and 3D apps, but I rechecked tom's benches and found out that the 1.7 Celeron is better than my 1Gz thundy. So now I've changed my mind and I think I'll get my dad's Celeron.
Am I doing the right thing?

What kind of motherboard is the Celeron coming with? Remember, AnandTech's tests are with a state-of-the-art i865PE board. You better check into this, because systems that come with a 1.8GHz Fluffaron may not even have an AGP slot on the board (i845GL/i845GV boards for example).

edit: and I would keep the Thunderbird over the Celeron any day of the week 😛

Haven't checked the motherboard yet, but it has AGP slots for sure there's a GF2 MX (AGP 4x version)running on it.

But you didn't say why?? I mean, aren't the benchmarks saying that the 1.8 Celeron is faster than the 1Ghz T-Bird?

You should be able to get to at least 1.3ghz with your Athlon, if not 1.4ghz. Then it would rape the 1.8ghz Celeryon.😉
