It has a 533mhz FSB already... I may have to see if I can get a decent 760 or 770 CPU off eBay...

Yes, you have a 533mhz fsb CPU. By buying a 400mhz fsb CPU, you can force it to run at 533mhz fsb thereby overclocking it by 33%. The $4 1.6ghz 725 would then be running at 2.13ghz, same as the 770 which is $20. So a simple wire will save $16.

 This is a great suggestion. These kind of cheap mods are so fun.

I guess the downside is the op could fry his computer if not careful with this jumper wire?

Monkey has it right... I'll stick with the direct install 770 😉

I'm usually pretty leery of buying used electronics (eBay and the like...) you never know what they have been subjected to until you pay for them and go through the effort to hook them up (I went through this kind of BS in my car stereo days...) but for $20 I don't really have much to lose.

No, just no. It is one of the original Pentium-M's from ~2005. An Atom netbook is probably faster. An E-350 netbook definitely is.

mfenn, I'm not ignoring your advise; it's just a backup laptop for my desktop, it doesn't have to be very fast, it just has to work. ...and I see your (and the others) logic for going all-in for a new laptop, there are some real deals out there right now and from a longevity point of view it makes some sense. But I'm thinking for around $100 I can get my old 6000 cleaned up and running good for another few years. By that time, the Intel i20 CPU and Win35 will be out and I can upgrade then. 😉

With all these recommended upgrades people are suggesting, new (used) CPU, RAM (overpriced), HDD (PATA: Overpriced) would add up to the price of a new machine. Take this laptop and convert it in to a HTPC or a music (DLNA) media streamer like I have done. 40GB should be plenty for music and a couple of small videos or youtube in HTML5 via Chrome.

Sure, just don't spend that $100 on an SSD. 🙂 It would be a great upgrade for most machines, but a machine this old just can't take advantage of it.

Perhaps, $100 might be best spent on a 1tb 2.5" self powered external HDD which all non-important data can be stored and kept in a shirt pocket? Or, a 32GB USB3 Flash Drive for $32 which is almost the same amount of storage he has on his computer right now.

Well, it was $32 earlier this week.. Now $37. Your laptop may have an express card, which you could take advantage of the full USB3 speed or run at USB2 with out an adapter. USB3 drives enjoy a small performance advantage over the fastest USB2 flash drives on a USB2 port. With or with out USB3, this is the route I would take if you are craving more storage.
