Replace fan in FSP 400 PSU (*quiet*)

Ok my loudest fan in my system is the Powersupply fan and i would like to fix this. At idle it isn't bad but at full load that beast is too loud for me.

I was thinking YateLoon? is this bad for the PSU?

You might lose some of the fan control capabilities that the original fan has. It should be fine for the most part though...

So you not think the PSU's stock fan controller will not control the yateloon?

You'll have to open up and see. Personally haven't opened up a FSP PSU so I can't tell you. You might have to solder the wires on or you may not.

Be very. very. careful. Screwing around with the PSU can injure or kill you. You need to wait AT LEAST 24 hours with the computer off to let any residual charge dissapate. Supposedly, pushing the power button on after unplugging the PSU from the wall is supposed to accelerate this.

Again, BE CAREFUL.

If you over heat the PSU's capacitor population, it's service life will be shortened considerably.

Unless the cap senses a need to release its charge, it'll never release. ever.

I just looked in my 400w FSP, and it uses a standard 3 pin connector.

Most FSP units and other SMPSs have a resistor in circuit that drains the bulk cap.
Some of you guys worry way too much. I've had a dozen PSUs open and never once have I been shocked. But I'm not poking around with a paper clip while the unit is powered on.


OP? How do you know that the noisy fan is not caused by a bad or dry bearing.

I figured there was something to drain the cap. Either way, caps that small won't do any harm to humans, but it could damage IC's and other electrical parts

I think I have the same PSU as you do, and I think you have to solder the wires if you want to replace the fan.

I am actually trying to silence my computer too, and the PSU is the only part that's left. I think I will result in buying a Seasonic later.

Thanks guys, but yeah i have the 500W one in sig not 400W lol, but should be the same.

I might give it a go when i get some spare time.

Using a sleeve bearing fan like the yate loon is supposed to wear a LOT faster in two situations: high heat (check) and mounted horizontally (check again). I'd get a quiet ball bearing like the ADDA Seasonic uses.

I have a FSP psu that is 4 years old on the original 120mm sleeve bearing yate loon. It is very quiet and keeps it cool. I plan to pick up some yate loons from svc.com to replace the fans in my other power supplies.
