Replace 670sli with single r9 290x?

So, BF4 doesn't work for me. I get an Nvidia DLL error. Reinstalled windows, drivers, screwed around endlessly and still get the same NVidia error. A lot of people have the issue, but many more don't. I'm done screwing with it and am about to throw a 290x in my rig to get the game working again.
Playing at 1080p @ 120hz, I would expect performance to be pretty similar. Sound good?

FWIW, everything else works perfect, BF3 included. Nothing crashes but BF4. It got screwy after Dragon's Teeth DLC.

I used to have nvidia.dll errors with bad hardware, have you tried the cards separately?

at this point I would wait for the 970/980 reviews before making a decision,

Yes, waste of $$ to go the 290 route. Uninstall and reinstall your drivers, I never get that error and I have update my drivers over and over, every time new ones come out.

I wouldn't buy any hardware at this particular point. Wait a week; that is supposedly when the NDA's for the gtx 980 and 970 will be up and then make a decision on getting new hardware if you want.

I just want something that works. A lot of BF4, Dead Rising 3 and other game users are reporting this nvwgf2umx.dll crash. I am afraid to get another Nvidia card only to have this issue happen again. BF4 is all I play and I can't get it fixed. Is AMD due to release some new cards to compete with the Nvidia 900 series? I don't usually follow AMD's release schedule.

I don't think anything's coming as soon as the 970/80.

Check out the 390x cooler thread, there appears to be a big die 390x in the pipeline, however the cooler contract thing was a first half 15 which may mean months away (if it's even for a "390x" or whatever they call it). In any case I'd wait for the 980 release to see if prices get shaken up a bit.

BF4 seems to get a lot of complaints across the board. I enjoy it with 290x crossfire and mantle, that said I would buy a used 290/x without hesitation since anything new is unlikely to shake up the value that a used 290 goes for.

If you go 290x, you will get rid of Multi-card setups problems.
By the way, GTX980 is close to be launched, so today is not the best time to chose your new graphics card.

I would wait till 970 and 980 launch and AMD most likely drops their prices, then go with a 290/290x.

Especially for BF4 Mantle is great on those cards.

Heck you can find real cheap R9 290's on ebay

Moonbogg - it sounds like you need your BF4 fix and you need it before October, when the GeForce cards are likely to land.

Here's my advice for BF4 @1080p/120Hz...go with an R9 290. It'll hold its value MUCH better than the 290X after that launch. I predict AMD dropping the price on the 290X $100 across the board, and maybe $25-50 on the 290. That means you won't feel as burned when the price drops come.

Frankly, I don't have any issues with either my 290 or 780 Ti in BF4, so I wouldn't be all that afraid to pick up an Nvidia card, and the GTX 780 is being cleared out right now at excellent prices. Maybe get an EVGA model and then step up to the 970/980 when you have some down time?

Thanks for replies. I agree about the price drops and the 290 being a wiser decision right now. Getting burned $100 would suck, especially so soon after purchase. I never buy GPUs like this being so late in the cycle, but this issue came up and needs to be fixed. I'm sure a single 290 would do just fine at 1080p. I can run on medium while maintaining AA levels to keep FPS up for all I care. Don't need ultra for small TDM matches.
guskline, how do those 290's do in Xfire @ 1440? You sound happy with them.

Except that as you said the investment to the heatsink company isn't planned on being paid until 1Q - 2Q 2015, so don't expect anything for at least 6-9 months, more realistically 2-3 months after they start that contract, so really 10-12 months.

Sounds like you've exhausted troubleshooting on the nvidia setup.

670sli is still a badass getup. Faster than 1x290.

If the nvidia cards are not worth anymore hassle, then for upgrade scenario go 2x290.

Of course 1x290 now is fine (just slower than 670sli), another later is "booya!" performance.

I wouldn't be in such a hurry to dump your 670's sli. How much troubleshooting have you done already. Have you reformatted, tried 1 card, rolled back or updated drivers, etc?

And if I can't convince you do more troubleshooting, how bout the 290 instead of the 290x?

Depend of the sli scaling, for the record the 290 scores :

With a mix of ultra and low (remove visual fluff) settings I get 120fps constant with 120% resolution scaling in mantle with a 2500k and r9 290. If all you play is bf4 go with the 290 and you won't be disappointed.

moonbogg, just installed them late last night and I'm tied up till Sunday Afternoon.
However, they appear much faster than my single, highly overclocked 780 Classified.

Moonbogg, there is a fix for that DLL error. My buddy was getting it on his GTX 780 and I think there is something in the registry that fixed it. I am talking to him tonight so I will ask him about it and get back to you.

You guys kick ass. Thanks for replies. I'll hold off for the moment.

guskline, don't spend a lot of time on this because I can search for benchies, but if you could just jump in a full 64 player shanghai server at 1080p maxed out and let me know how it does, that would be pretty cool. I don't need scientific style documentation, just an average FPS figure and your impressions would be great. Thanks.

The vast majority of nvidia owners dont get that error, there must be something particularly messed up with ur OS or Origin install....have u tried reinstalling Origin & deleting bf4 completely then reinstalling? Do a clean install of nvidia drivers? Download the newest DX pack?

I reinstalled windows and started from scratch. Tried drivers as old as march. Tried a bunch of silly tricks that people said would fix it and nothing has. Sometimes I think they list these insanely long processes to "fix" your issue and I think they are just trolling you to make you do a bunch of work, lol. So yea, nothing I tried fixed it yet.

Wow. Well something is off, must be a 3rd party app. if most of us got that chip nvidia would be swamped with customer support issues. Is ur OS legit?
