repairman question

does any one know the legal amount a repairman can charge for a car part above cost? im pretty sure they can't make up any price they want, but im not positive.

Supply and demand, they can charge whatever you will pay. At least I know of no law otherwise. They do have to get your permission above $20 I think and you can request the old parts. I had a friend get a van's rear brakes fixed though and they told her she needed new rotors, I told her to ask for the old ones thinking they would stall on it, they didnt', they gave them right to her and there was nothing wrong with them! How about that for big ol' balls........

It may vary by state, but my first thought is they can charge whatever they want. Heck, clothes are marked up 400%.

Dealer items are regularly marked up 100+ percent.

Unless a certain state has a regulation against it, I don't see why there would be a cap. If someone was way out line marking parts up, they wouldn't be in business for long.

Due to the way liability suits are proliferating these days, many shops will only replace parts for critical systems like brakes. If rotors are warped, they no longer turn them on a lathe - if they do, and the car is subsequently involved in an accident(for whatever reason), they can expect to be party to a lawsuit.

Always ask for the old parts, and if you have doubts - ask them to show you exactly why replacement was needed. If you still have doubts, then take the parts to another shop for a 2nd opinion.
