Repair/Upgrade or buy new?

My uncle has an old Dell laptop (133mhz, 40MB RAM, Win95) that's got 27MB HHD space left. I tried to compress the drive just so he could get more drive space for now. When I go to compress it says C has errors, so I scan disk like it asks and it goes fine. Then go back to compress and it continues to say there are errors. What do you recommend me to tell him? Should he buy a new HHD for the laptop (how much would a 10GB one be?)? Should he just forget it, sell me the old laptop (I could run Nix on it), and buy another used one or even a desktop? What would you guys do any why? Thanks for the input.

Laptops are very expensive if you want one at a decent speed they are still $900+ new. For $900 you can get a desktop that would eat most laptops for supper in games and stuff. Does he have plenty of money or would he be buying used(older) laptop?

For $900 I am guessing a desktop something like:
Athlon 1800+ XP
DDR mobo
256mb DDR
Geforce 3 Ti200
40GB HD
Santa Cruz
52x CD-Rom
16x burner
Case
17" monitor

I am just guessing here so.
