Repair install

I turned on my computer and I got this error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have a windows xp cd but I dont know exactly how to go about re-installing a new copy of the file.

Boot to your windows XP cd and tell it you want to repair. It will allow you to login to a repair command prompt, copy the file at this point. Alternatively you can run SFC.exe /scannow which will compare protected system files against your XP cd and repair if needed

Good call. Here's a link for the OP File checker for XP

Start > Run
key in:
sfc /scannow


Note the *Space* between sfc and /scannow.

I tried to make a point about simplicity in problem solving because I believe it will be usefull to the OP in future cases. My fault is that I wrongly assumed he would actually make the association with the filename as the search term. I did nonetheless provide the most direct solution through my second message.
