Rep. Westmoreland (GA) - Obama "uppity"

CallMeJoe

Diamond Member
Representative Lynn Westmoreland (R - Ga):

Just from what little I?ve seen of her and Mr. Obama, Sen. Obama, they?re a member of an elitist-class individual that thinks that they?re uppity

CNN link

How can someone from Georgia claim not to know the term "uppity" has racial overtones and keep a straight face? I hope Senator McCain mans up and puts this neo-Klan moron in his place. There's no place for this crap in 21st century America!

(Or am I hopelessly naive?)

edit: fixed missing " in title

What a lying sack of shit. I'm from CA and now live in MA and I know exactly what that term means.

I wasn't aware it had racial overtones until fairly recently. I suppose I should stop calling my kid uppity...

Tommy Vietor, a spokesman for Obama's campaign, would not comment to CNN, but told The Hill, " ?Sounds like Rep. Westmoreland should be careful throwing stones from his candidate?s eight glass houses."

Saying you're only middle class if you have *sob* less than 5 million dollars . . . is that elitist or what?

I don't know.

Extremely poor choice of words (to say the least).

Yep, will force McCain to issue another denouncement of *race in politics* etc.

You think? It was just a stupid son of a bitch from Georgia who happened to be a Rep. Most Republicans know better than to say it in public.

I didn't know that word had racial overtones but someone in politics should. On another note, how horribly constructed is that sentence?

I find it hilarious that people keep calling him an elitist. Senator and Mrs. McCain are just your average joes.

The word uppity has negative racial connotations ... someone from Georgia would probably be aware of it.

Uppity is not racist. Uppity is what poorer (and when you're as rich as Obama is, most in the US are poorer) call rich b@stards.

If you think this is racist, get your 'Woe is me' and/or 'White Guilt' meters recalibrated.

I'm been in the south my whole life. Never heard it had racial connotations. I can't keep up with all the non PC terms any more.

The term has been historically used in the South almost EXCLUSIVELY to refer to blacks who don't "know thier place" and attempt to rise to positions and status which "should be reserved for white people." This judgement could be used for all kinds of judgements and situation.

The word historically was actually a very strong racially derogatory term when used in this way, especially since blacks judged as "uppity" often were targetted for lynching.

Given Westmoreland's age and the fact he grew up in the South, its simply not plausible he didn't basically know this.

You should educate yourself on the extreme racial history of the word here in America, since it seems you don't already know.

How can you defend calling him an elitist? Is higher education and not going to 5 different universities as a journalism major scary? If it is indeed the higher education aspect, I would argue that we need a smart president, someone with knowledge of our history and laws. Maybe that clinging to guns bit? I really hope it isn't money related. Senator McCain showed how out of touch he is with that $5 million dollar answer and his wife wore a $300,000 outfit to the convention. As a CO, hardy har har, her served poor people of Chicago. Why do people insist on making this campaign about image only. I want to understand how Obama is an elitist, please explain it to me.

I lived in Birmingham in the 1960s. I drank from "Whites Only" fountains, and wondered why I couldn't get a snack at the "Colored" diner in the basement in Macy's. I grew up with racist pricks and proud Klansmen. If you don't know what a Southerner means when he calls a Negro "uppity" you are woefully ignorant of American history.

Why is that when "racially charged" or "racially insensitive" political statements are discussed in this forum, the same people every time come into the thread and try to claim the statement has no racial overtones???

Are they the White Power brigade or something? Making sure them black'uns don't get special treatment?

Ah, I think this just reminded me what it means.

< sarcasm >

Yeah. He could always use another, more neutral label favored by Republicans... like Macaca.

When used in the context in question its INDISPUTEDLY racist.

Uppity isn't even that common a word in the general context, its been VERY heavily used in the racist one. The word isn't that far off the N word when used in a context appearing to describe a black man rising above what the person voicing the word views as his natural station.

I you think its not racist you need to study the history of racism in the South a bit more.

The year is 2008. We can call anybody we want uppity because it describes their attitude.

Obama and his wife are uppity. I'm sick and tired of this PC nonsense.

To be more explicit, it really IS similar to refering to Obama with the N word.

Uppity is actually one of the very STRONGEST racist terms you can use in this context.

Its only basically "PC nonsense" if you don't see any problem using the n word to describe black people either. (It has another meaning, but some people deliberately don't use the word in any context anymore given the extremely strong racist overtones it has in some of its uses.)
