Actually, the WaPo didn't take long to use his death in a cheap political statement against Trump. For all of Cumming's lifetime achievements, being an "opponent of Trump" is what he gets as a headline.

Per what I read somewhere, appears to be a time thing as in you need to serve x years or on y other commissions but Nancy’s decision weighs heavily on the process.

From a deep well of personal integrity and an abiding love of his country and its democratic institutions, now under attack from a pompous, narcissistic authoritarian demagogue, Elijah Cummings helped lead the principled resistance against this clear and present threat to our Republic. He would have been proud of the obit headline "opponent of Trump."

But it doesn't matter now. After a lifetime of service to our country, he is at rest, and beyond the petty snipings of small minded political partisans, so blinded by their own ugly ignorance that they think "opponent of Trump" diminishes a man proud to have helped lead this fight.

He may not have gotten all the way to the promised land with the rest of us, but by God he led us through that valley just as long as his all too mortal heart would allow.

He was a man of honor. I will miss him. You should too.

I think brandonbull is merely re-stating the fact that, today, those active in their time and remembered today as "opponents of Mussolini" are clearly looked down on as disrespectful nobodies that never accomplished anything of note.
