Merry Christmas folks. I bought myself a gift certificate at rentmydvd even though I'm a current customer. Netflix gift certificates you cannot do this. First time customers only it says.

Here's rentmydvd.com gift certificate prices
Plan A 2 DVDs out at a time (regular monthly fee $13.95)
3month $33.48($11.16/month) Regular $41.85 Savings of 20%
6month $58.59 ($9.77/month) Regular $83.70 Savings of 30%
12month$58.59 ($8.77/month) Regular$167.40 Savings of 40%

Plan B 4 DVDs out at a time (regular monthly fee $23.95)
3 month $57.48 ($19.16/month) Regular $71.85 Savings of 20%
6 month $100.59 ($16.77/month) Regular $143.70 Savings of 30%
12month $172.44 ($14.37/month) Regular $287.40 Savings of 40%

I got the Plan B 12 months for $172.44. Hell I'm saving $115 this year. Now's a good time to cancel netflix once and for all. If your a current rentmydvd customer like I was. Just switch your account to HOD and wait till it expires (billing cycle my ends 1/7/02) to redeem your gift certificate that you can purchase for yourself. I love Santa. I really like it....If I send back a DVD on Monday..they get it Wednesday and sent me out a DVD the SAME day unlike Netflix and I get it Friday.

edit: forgot to say I started 10/9 with rentmydvd and got 18 DVDs the first month...Thanskgiving I was outta town but total since I started I have gotten 34 DVDs...not too shabby 34 x $4.00 at blockbuster hell = $136. Yes I did Netflix for a year and a half back when it was 5dvds for $20 now it's only 3dvds and their turn around times sucks the big one.

never mind...something on demand.

Thanks for the info! I'm currently a 2-out member and saw the gift-certificate banner on the site, but didn't bother checking it out. This is the perfect opportunity to go up to the 4-out plan.

It says the only way for current rentmydvd customers to purchase a gift certificate for themselves which I did is to cancel your current plan. I did that today and it will go into effect January 7th, 2002 at which time it switches over to On Demand sorry my mistake not HOD (Hooked on DVD) at which point I redeem my $172 gift certificate. You will lose your queue (I had 42 DVDs queued so I printed it out) but not till January 7th. Remember buy it for yourself before December 25th to be safe.

Here's some quotes from there website
"It is really simple to buy a Gift Certificate through Rentmydvd.com. Buy it for a friend, for a family member, or buy it for yourself and you will be watching movies for months to come."
and
"If a recipient cancels the membership before the gift certificate has expired, refunds to your account will not be provided. Gift certificates are not redeemable for cash.
Current Rentmydvd Membership Users must first downgrade to On Demand Users before Gift Certificates can be redeemed. If a recipient cancels the membership before the gift certificate has expired, refunds to the member who gave the gift certificate will not be provided. Recipients can cancel anytime. "

Sounds like rentmydvd might be a nice alternative to Netflix. I've used Netflix for quite a while...I started when they had unlimited rentals for $9.99 or something like that...the service was great at first. Then as time went on...Netflix started jacking up the monthly fee and turn around times started to really suck...

I'll have to check 'em out. Anyone else have any experience with rentmydvd?

well, i too was sick of NetFlix after 1 year. Great concept, baaaaad service.
I checked out RentMyDVD, but they always refused to give me 2-4 weeks of free service to try them out..very bad IMO

Now, I'm with this place called DVDavenue. I joined becuz their distribution center was only one state away, instead of 32 as in the case of NetFlix. The funniest part is that when I received the first shipment, the return envelopes had real, live postage stamps on them.
I could imagine some guy in Maryland licking stamps on all the return envelopes.

I'll let you know how goes it...

yes it does...you can have up to 50 in your queue. Let's see this past two weeks they've sent me Moulin Rouge, Planet of the Apes, Swordfish, and TombRaider among others. If I was with netflix I'd probably wait 4 months to get one of those titles. dvdavenue.com is only a dollar more expensive per month and you can get PS1, PS2 games also..so that might be worth checking out too. Netflix really sucks now but don't take my word for it..see resellerratings.com Plus netflix just laid off 10% of their workforce and they have 400,000 customers and 15,000 signed up just last month.

so you can add ones to your queue, even ones that are not available? i am not a member but the ones that were "not available" or "out" didn't let you click any "rent" button.? i just signed up for netflix after cancelling dvdrentalcentral.com. I am in the northeast so sending to CA sucks for netflix. but i want a place that has a lot of anime since that's what i'm getting it for

i've been with rentmydvd for about 7 months now. overall it's a good service and a reasonably good value (if you make a point of watching the movies as soon as you get them.) however they have really begun to suck at getting me many of the movies in my queue AT ALL! i'm not saying all the movies, but i have at least 6 movies in my queue that have been there for 5 months. that is not acceptable. but at the lower price with this deal i just might grab a 12 month 2 out certificate...might even give a gift certificate to my parents as well.

This looks really good... I'm on NetFlix's granfathered $20/4 plan which is better than most, but a lot of whats in my queue is out of stock. Hmm... I wonder if I should switch...

How's the turn-around time in the SF bay area?

Do you already have to be a subscriber to get these discounted Gift Certificates?
I'm interested in the Plan A, 12 months, but I only see
Plan A Unlimited DVD Rentals 2 at a time
3 months $33.48 (Regular $41.85) Savings of 20 %
6 months $58.59 (Regular $83.70) Savings of 30 %
12 months $100.44 (Regular $167.40) Savings of 40 %

Is there a way for me to get these discounts as a new member?
