renting an apartment

I'm staying at a loft in the city, and my lease is up at the end of June. I have an opportunity to move into a really nice duplex with my stepbrother as the neighbor for about 1/3 the rent that I am paying now, and it has more than twice the space.

However, it won't be available until September 1. That leaves me with a window of July and August.

I'm often told that you can stay beyond your lease, but the lease is the minimum. If I want to stay in my loft for two more months, can I do so without signing another lease? or is this just dependant on the terms of my current lease and not some blanket law or something?

I'm getting ready to call my landlord to see what they think about my staying just two extra months and not signing a new lease.

Do this, this is about all you can do really...since he/she is the deciding factor.

contact the landlord, ask if you can go month-to-month for two months.

they may or may not agree depending on how fast they think they can turn around and re-rent the apartment.

typically the price for rent goes up as you're going "month to month". your landlord might be cool about it, though. the only way to know is to ask.

Most people are not worried if you want to extend the lease a couple months. They are more worried if you want to leave early . It is a hassle to move people in and out of a rental and all the stuff that comes with it, which is why people don't like to rent month to month and have people moving in and out all the time.

I would agree that most is more correct.

If you do call your landlord, just give him your move out date of Sept 1st now, he will appreciate the advanced notice and will most likely not make you sign a lease.

This thread reminds me... I am pretty sure when I moved into my current apartment, I signed a 1-year lease. But that was a year and two months ago. I guess I've been on month-to-month for the last two months. I never even brought it up with my landlord, though. He contacts me if anything important comes up. Otherwise I just write a check every month and everything works out smoothly.

Same thing happened to us - but in retrospect, explicitly bringing it up with management would've been the responsible thing to do.

This. Check your lease. Most say after lease is up it rolls to m2m.

And worst case, sublet a room on craigslist for 2 months. Or move your shit to storage and live out of a motel.
