Renting a Car ...

I have a friend coming into FL next week from NYC.

She's flying into Orlando, and is trying to get people to go pick her up and take her back to Tallahassee (4 hrs each way).

I suggested she rent a car, but she said she lost her license and has no insurance. I figure you can just pay for the insurance coverage from the rental company. But with regard to the license thing, I mean, all she did was lose it, so she can get re-issue.

Do they even ask for a license? One of my buddies said he's never shown license when renting (I think they do).

How do people from other countries with no valid US license rent a car? Passport ID?

TIA.

Every time I have rented a car they have required proof of insurance and a license.

You can't rent a car without a license. She needs to get a temporary license from the DMV before she can rent a car. She will need a valid picture ID as well. Not sure on the insurance thing, it varies from state to state.

Yes, she needs a license. I think when I've rented they don't care about insurance and assume you'll get it. Your friend is a dumb dumb. Tell her to get on a greyhound bus.

if she just lost the little paper license and not "lost it cause she was arrested for DUI" , then she should go to the DMV and get it re-issued.
i have always showed my drivers license when getting a rental car. if the person is from out of the US , they still show their DL from whatever country they are from. when i was in europe, we showed our US DL to rent a car in europe

You need a license. I never have to show mine since it is on my rental car records (Hertz Gold).
As for insurance.........I don't need to have my own. Then again, I only rent on business trips and the parent company I work for owns a car insurance company....

I just rented a car last week and the first thing they asked for was for license. You can purchase insurance from the rental place for like 10-20$ a day.

I just emailed the crazy ass the following ... I only put the min wage in there to exemplify that time is money:
------------------

The more I think about this... it's fvcking crazy. I mean, we know I'm crazy, but you're definitely fvcking crazy.

8 hrs of driving ... almost 800 miles ... for pickup and dropoff. So that's 16 hours and 1600 miles in a car.

So if you do by gas ... it's:
800 miles / 19 mpg = 42 gallons x 2.30 = ~$100
Or by IRS it's:
800 miles x .37c / mile = ~$300

8hrs x 6.15 = $50
(isn't that minimum wage?)

SO ... for both ways ... it could be ...

$300-700 total expenses depending on what methods you use.

For $318 you can get a plane ticket from Delta.com, or like $320 on Travelocity or something.

It would save the aggravation of driving. Miles off cars, wasted gas, etc ... and you wouldn't have to sit for 8 hours in a car, just 2 in a plane.

I mean seriously. SERIOUSLY.

Are you here Fri night (8) - Sunday (10)?

You definitely need a valid license and a picture ID to rent a car, they don't just give a car out to anyone

If you don't have insurance, you can pay extra and get it from the rental car company
