Renting a car under 21 can it be done

I gotta go to Columbus, OH (from Baltimore, MD) by myself this weekend for work. I have to take a lot of work material with me (display booth, brochures, 32'' LCD, etc) it all comes out to be about 300 pounds.

It was a huge hassle when I had to fly to San Fran last month with less than half of that stuff so I definitely want to drive (i've driven much further before).

I'd really like to avoid putting 400 miles on my car each way, especially since I want to trade it in later this year.

Is there any rental agency that'll rent a minivan (that will be driven out of the state) to me even though I'm only 19? Cost isn't a big issue because it'll cost the company around $400 to get it shipped there and back, plus $300 for my flight, and another $100 for my transportation around that area.

Summary:
  • 19 and need to rent a car for a business trip.
  • Company does not have an account with the rental agency so I can't put it on their account
  • It will be rented using the company credit card
  • Most places that i have called have 21 minimum (even with surcharge) unless you're on official government or military business.

I know with Hertz you just pay something like $25 or $50 extra bucks a day if you are under 25

Nevermind here. I guess Hertz does. :)

Best bet would be to call around and ask though.

Will the cost to rent a minivan be greater than the extra money you get when you trade in your car? If so, makes sent to take your car.

See if the company will reimburse you a certain amount for every mile or something.

Most places I call say even if someone else rents it and puts me on as a driver I still have to be over 21.

Not trying to do anything illegimate in case I get into a wreck or get pulled over.

Enterprise has an 18-21 option when booking I believe. They also have the cheapest young driver surcharge I've found.

I think he said the company is paying for it, because he said the compnay was going to pay for his flight.

Insurance premiums like that are a joke. It varies from state to state and they basically charge you double for the rental.....it's highway robbery.

it varies by state and company.

NY state law mandates that people under the age of 25 can rent cars, but the rental companies then charge huge surcharges/premiums to the sub-25 renters.

Have your company get the reservation. They will generally rent to anyone with a corporate account.

It can be done, you're going to have to contact the companies and tell them you're underage. They'll charge you at least an extra $25/day.

That's what to do. They probably have an account, and the rental car agency will make an exception if the company is making the arrangements.

Small company, most of the employees are consultants so there isn't an account with the rental agency.

Besides I had this same problem last summer at my previous job. They wouldn't let the company do it on their account even though it was a multi billion dollar company.

Rent a UHaul or other "moving van".

Seriously. They'll rent those to ANYBODY. I got a pair of 26ft's last weekend.

If you get one of the small ones, or better yet, a straight cargo van, it'll still be pretty damned driveable. You'll look like a total douche when you go to park it, though :p
