You should payt $282.50.

He is correct. He said around $25 more. That's $25 more than you. It's costing him $25 more for him to have that room. Your math would cost him $50 more. When someone says they will pay $25 more it's $25.

If you are going to look at it like you want to then...... where did you agree to pay $25 less than the equal share? Because whats happening is you are now paying $25 less and he's paying $25 more for a total of $50 difference. No where that I see did you tell him "ok Ill pay $25 less and you cover my $25 so we dont come up short on rent, and then you also pay an additional $25 more on top of that".

$282.50 sounds right to me. However, instead of playing with change, I would have tried to negotiate $280 and he pay $310. Then again, I like nice round numbers.

That is the ambiguous part. $25/month more. More than what? The midpoint? Or more than you pay? Two different ways of looking at it, both of which could be correct.

my first impression would be the amount that the OP's roommate had in mind.

It was still ambiguous and should have been cleared up before either party agreed to something.

My roommate rocks.

She told me the rooms were almost hte same size but I figured out her room was HUGE after we moved in, so I requested for me to pay less, and she agreed, and pizzown. Mahaha.
