Hey AT'ers,
As I was getting on the Metro this morning in Fairfax, I was handed a flyer promoting 'Flexcar' rental service. They let you rent cars by the hour to get to and from work and other daily commutes. They pay for gas and parking while you have the car and insurance and maintenance are also provided by them. I'm not exactly sure how it works, but it seems like it could be hot for those of us without cars.

Flexcar.com

PS-- They currently offer service in DC and Seattle

Sounds good I just called their Portland, Oregon business office at 503-328-3539 and listened to the recording about how it works and pricing.

The recording said it's fastest to apply online.

$25 non-refundable application fee.

Their insurance company will take a few days to review each applicants past driving record. Sounds like you cannot have more than 2 moving violations or accidents within the past 3 years, otherwise you may not qualify.

If you do their test drive option you only pay for what you use $3.50 per hour plus $0.90 per mile I think this includes gas, insurance, maintenance, etc. not sure about gas that could be your responsibility.

There's also plans available if you plan on using the car more than 4-5 hours a month.

They're expensive compared to regular car rentals. They even charge for mileage driven. And they have inky-dinky cars.

I think they have pickups available under some conditions, so it might me worth it if you're moving or something like that. Short of that, I might as well rent from Budget.
