renew LCD on a notebook?

I have an IBM laptop which is good except for minor LCD blemish that won't remove just with warm water and cloth. Is there a way to renew the screen without causing more harm?

if the blemish won't come off with water and wipe, if may not be worth trying to remove it as the blemish may be part of the plastic covering the LCD.
