Renaming Multiple Files

Is anyone aware of any programs that are free, and also free of any spyware/adware, that would allow me to rename many photographs or any other files all at once. Renaming each file by hand is just wrong, there's got to be an easier way. Windows 98 support would be the best, but XP is fine too as I plan on upgrading very soon.
