Removing XP and loading Win98

I have a new HP laptop w/ XP installed. Didn't want it that way but since it arrived w/ XP loaded I thought I'd give it a try. After a week of use I've decided I'd rather have 98. Also, many of my programs, such as NU 2001, Norton AV, Outlook 98, etc., aren't compatible on XP so I have to upgrade.

Is there any way to safely and cleanly remove XP and install Win98?

you should be able to use a win98 startup floppy & use fdisk to delete the non dos partition( assuming that xp is on NTFS[= non dos]).
then just fdisk & format normally.
you'll need the necessary drivers for you hardware before you start!
some of the older compaqs have the bios on the hdd as a hidden partition so be aware of this fact though not sure it'll apply to you.

Thanks, but I really didn't want to have to go into fdisk and start formatting the disk. I recall a command line you could use at the DOS prompt, to fool the bootup process into thinking the Win98 CD was the correct source and to load the OS. I used this about a year ago to install Win98 over Win95a and it worked like a charm. I was told it would work in reverse also, but I never tried that.
