removing thermal grease?

Hi, I've got standard silicon grease on my CPU and HSF. What's the best/safest way to remove the silicon residue from the CPU?

PS- I can actually read the CPU markings imprinted in the layer of silicon grease on the HS surface. Does that imply that I used too much, not enough, or just right amount?

hello,

I always use standard lighter fluid with a Q-Tip, the yuckie stuff comes right off. Just be careful not to drench the CPU, just put a little bit on the Q-Tip and remove the grease and allow to air dry for a bit.

Finger Nail Polish remover works as well 🙂

Alcohol or nail polish remover is fine...for both HSF & CPU core. Just remember to make its dried completely b4 applying thermal compound & reinstall the combo.

Rubbing alcohol will work as well.

Personally, I like to use WD40, however, some say it leaves a residue that will get caught in the microscopic trenches of a heatsink decreasing it's functionality. I have have never had a problem. Your mileage may vary.
