Removing the Windows tray icon for VNC

I installed Real VNC yesterday and while it works pretty well, it doesn't have many options. I am particularly looking for one that will remove its server icon from the Windows tray. Maybe this one just doesn't give you that option and if it doesn't, can anyone recommend a server that does let you take the icon off the tray? I have heard people talk about compression settings and stuff but this one doesn't really give you that option other than compressed or RAW. Hopefully this is just a lite version of VNC compared to others.

They specifically do not allow that because in the opinion of the developers, there is no non-malicious reason. They say you can compile it from source if you want to do that. (The old AT&T page used to say that).

I guess that is a fair reason but it is just one more icon to clutter up up the taskbar. XP's option to hide inactive icons is just really anoying too so I never choose it. Guess I will have to deal with it then. Maybe I will take a look at the source and hope that the section for creating the icon is commented so I can snip it out and build it.

the systray icon is just the helper app. The server (when installed as a service) will keep running after you quit the app (at least that's how it worked for me)

Interesting, I'll have to try that.

don't forget to "set default settings" before you quit the app, those are the ones used by the service... (linkie)
