i have a coppermine celeron 1.1ghz running on a abit 440bx slot1 (using a 370-slot1 converter) in a very small case which i hope to use as a media/bittorrent pc. due to the small case, i cannot use the oem hsf as it is too tall -- psu is in the way. so i'm using a cheap hsf -- but it has a very loud fan.

can anybody point me to info on how i can safely determine if i can run the cpu without a fan? just a heatsink which probably has about the same mass as the oem. if necessary i can underclock the celery -- that is if i can still watch divx at the slower speed.

it really depends on what your temps are. if your temps are low enough, you can run it passively. and then you can always undervolt, but i'm not sure how much lower you can go and still get solid video playback....
