Removing programs from control panel (XP)

I tried to install a program (Quicken 2002) in xp and it failed. I was using my backup disk, so I put the original in and it loaded fine. Now I have two Quicken's in the programs listed in the control panel. I tried to unistall one and it says the file is corrupt and the install will not continue. I seem to remember a tread about removing items from the control panel, anyone know how to do this.

Open Control Panel and select Add/Remove Programs. Look at the list of installed programs and see if you have two Quikens installed. Delete the corrupted one (or both and reinstall Quicken).

That's what I tried to do, I get a message that the first one that I tried to install is corrupt and that uninstall can not continue. I deleted the file from the programs file and though it probably doesn't hurt anything I'd like to get rid of it in the add/remove control panel.

Here's a work around that has helped me. Use System Restore and a date that was good just BEFORE you tried to install Quicken 2002. That will boot and ultimately give you a registry that does not contain any of the new stuff, nor will it appear in Control Panel. As far as XP is concerned, it does not exist. Then just use Explorer and manually delete the Quicken 2002 folder and everything in it. You can then start over.

Why hasn't anyone stated the obvious solution?

TweakUI for XP from MS will allow you to delete entries in the Add/Remove panel.

If you don't have TweakUI installed or don't want to, just open up the registry editor (regedit) and go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - Microsoft - Windows - CurrentVersion - Uninstall

Each of the Keys (the folders..) in there are the different items from the Add/Remove Programs menu. Just delete whichever keys you don't want showing up in the menu. This is what TweakUI would be manipulating.

Because we like to do things the real way!
