Removing Media Player as default program

I've been trying to figure this out for a week with no luck. I got a program that I like much better than Media Player (Ace DivX player) and would like it to be my default program. I have succeeded in getting Ace to open all my files on the HD or on CD/DVD. But I can't get it to work with IE. I still like IE better than Firefox (I know I know...) and want to make it use Ace instead of WMP when clicking on videos, music, etc. Is there any way at all to do this? According to advice I've gotten from some other forums, MS might have made it an unchangeable option... but I refuse to give up!

Have you tried uninstalling MP entirely? There are guides on how to do this, as it isn't a simple procedure, but it is possible. Maybe with MP gone, you can get IE to use something else after it doesn't find MP?

Yeah I have looked into that, and as you said, it isn't exactly an easy operation. I was hoping there would be an easier way before undertaking that task. Any other ideas?

Or, does anyone know if Opera or Firefox let you specify a different media player program?

Did you try "Set Program Access and Defaults" to your media player software?
