Removing Linux and Installing Windows

I'm trying to remove linux of my netbook and install windows. I have no idea how to remove linux, ive tried searching online but im having trouble understanding

how do i reach the command prompt of linux, i read about something called fdisk.. dont know how it works

can someone provide me a more detailed step by step on what to do??
 
Which version of windows are you trying to install. If XP or later, just walk through the setup and it will give the opportunity to delete all partitions and then partition / install Windows.

I wouldn't expect any better performance. Possibly worse.
 
i was actually trying to install windows 98..

i'm trying to install a copy of XP right now, it crashed during the setup =.=, going for a second try

Go out and download gparted live CD. Remove your Linux partitions and just leave the drive blank for XP. In the case of 98, you should probably use gparted to format to Fat32.

BUT... I imagine that your netbook uses SATA for its drives, and I don't think you'll find any SATA drivers written for 98 or any other current hardware.

I'm just gonna come out and ask... why 98?

I mean i have a VM of 95, and even DOS to play games from the 80's when i get nostalgic, but i cant imagine a PRACTICAL reason other than just being geeky, to install 98 on any actual machine.

I think there's gonna be a ton of driver issues. I'd be amazed if it came close to working properly. That said, trying only takes a bit of time. It'll be an interesting experiment in any case. I like the Gparted idea for dealing with the partitions.

That, and M$ won't even issue any further patches for it as it's an EOL OS. Pity that W2K is going to be the same way this Summer. 🙁

Also, account security is going to be horrid if you're going to insist on 98.

Like i said this really should only be fore legacy reasons, or just to geek out and see what it does.

The VM I made I alotted 15GB of space and 1GB of RAM. I doubt very many 95 machines actually ever SAW that much resources, i know the only true 95 machine i owned was back in 1998 before 98 really came out or caught on, and it was a P166 with 64MB of SIMMs and a 3GB HDD. Now its got access to a 2.5GHz quad core and a gig of RAM. So its all about geeking out and goofing with the old school stuff for fun. I wouldnt implement or try to use this for any real purpose however.

There is no way you are going to get much hardware in a notebook working with windows 98. Why would you even want to do this? and why nuke linux to do it? you might as well keep the OS thats actually going to work with your hardware and dual boot but i cant even see a point in that.

Since no one actually did what he asked (including me, we were all so hung up on WHY he would do this) i'm inclined to do so now. Most netbooks dont have any CD Drives, I'm assuming you have a Win98 CD. What you should do is download and install the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool, it's free. Once installed, get a large enough thumbdrive to hold the Win98 install disk. Make a startup disk (Try bootdisk.com, there should be something you can use there in an image, yes this is a floppy, FDISK should come with most startup disks). Format the USB drive using the HP utility and point the source of the startup files to your startup disk in the floppy drive (USB floppies work too). Copy any other files from the startup disk that the utility does not grab, and then put the win98 disc files in a folder on the disk as well.

Boot the netbook to the drive and kick off FDISK, format the drive (it will make you reboot), boot to the drive again and kick off win98 setup. Should install just fine.

AGAIN... i'm still not sure why you would do this, but there it is. =)
 
guys guys, the net book is my dads lol it was his idea haha... well i tried installing a copy of XP pro on it, and it jus crashes during installation, right at the beginning, with its jus unzipping files n stuff =[
 
If he really really wants win98 you could make whatever linux is on there log the user in automatically and start a fullscreen vm of some flavor with win98. It might actually be able to have wireless that way too. That way if he needs a modern OS, he can just switch out of win 98.

Removing linux is just a matter of deleting the partitions.
 
I just wanted to say, instead of Windows it may be worth trying Moblin, it's an OS built specifically for netbooks, and from what I've seen of it it looks pretty slick.
