Removing Heatsink and CPU

I have a A64 motherboard and CPU. It looks like I am going to have to replace the MB and wanted to know if I cam remove the CPU without separating it from the Heatsink. If not where do I get a new Thermal pad for the Heatsink. Thank You

you cant take off the processor without taking off the heatsink. You can get thermal paste or a pad at any computer store.

Radio shack has carried white thermal paste for about $2. Fry's has several brands, starting at $3.

I was told not to use thermal paste because it wears away after awhile, Dont know if this is true or not. Also on my old heatsink I had a thermal pad. Will I be able to clean off the old thermal pad off with rubbing alchol and a cotton swab and be fine?

Thanks for the replies🙂
