Just got my 600 duron in today, and i was trying to decide if i should pretest without unlocking the bridges to be sure it isn't DOA. How hard is it to remove the greasy stuff/pad under the heatsink after it has been attached? i don't wanna buy more....

If it is one of those gooey pads like the ones on the Taisols, it may take a bit more effort to remove. However, if its thermal paste, you should have no issues cleaning up.

I used a strong solvent, WD40 with tissue paper on BOTH the HSF and the Chip itself. After that, i used Denatured Alcohol to wipe them off and polished the chip (TBird 850Mhz) till it was my lover and span.

Didn't manage to clean off the hardened patches on the sides of the chip. (That might be the reason why my temps rose after 1 day)

Then applied the thermal grease which came with the Alpha Pal HSF. Spreaded it like butter on the chip and then fixed the HSF on. The clip design is WORSE than the FOP38. But it is easier on the hands. With the Alpha Pal, It was nearly impossible to use a screw driver. I used my fingers to force the chip on. With the FOP38, the edges are so damn sharp and hard that you'd probably bleed on the clip if you tried that. But it's better designed for a screwdriver.
