I have an old 200W AT power supply that is running in my ftp server comp. My Q is can I safely remove the fan from this PS in order to make the server quieter? I need to make it whisper quiet. I am a very light sleeper. I have the CPU (P133) overcooled by a golden orb :) so I do not think that is a problem. Would this be plausible. It is only an exhaust fan, its not cooling the PS I dont think. Any ideas?

If you remove the fan on the power supply you'll notice your system get pretty warm. I've known systems to run with a broken power supply fan for some time with no problems, so it is possible. But think of this: My girlfreinds kid's system lost the power supply fan and with the cdrom sitting right above the supply the kids had to let the cd's cool off before they would take them out of the tray. The cd's were very warm but not to the point where they might warp.

yeah. On an old system like a P133 you'll be fine probably. It WILL get hot though. I 'accidentaly' put a pen into an old PC at college (a P133 i think) and the computer is still fine, but the case gets very warm.

Your call.

Better way is to purchase a low-noise fan or/and switch it to 7 volts: PLUS to Yellow wire(+12 v), GROUND to Red (+5 v).

If the PSU fan is 80mm, I just got an Enermax sleeve bearing that has thermo control. Its speed is dependent on how hot your system is (based on the sensor on the fan). even at max speeds, its so quiet its almost noiseless.

What no one suggested is buying a QUIET cooling fan, one of those Panaflos..
