Removing Dell Bloatware

I recall a link describing the process for cleaning up Dell notebooks...but can't find it at the moment..I'd appreciate a little help on that.

Have a Latitude 820 in transit and want to be ready when it arrives.

Thanks

JT

there's very little crapware/bloatware with systems from Small Business. It's when you buy from Dell Home you have to worry about.

Wipe the drive and do a fresh -install- of WinXP (not a "restore"), then download and install the latest drivers.

It's much easier to do your own install of Windows than it is to scrape out the bloatware.

I just got some D620s in for work and the only thing that came loaded was Google Desktop and Google Toolbar. None of the other crap when we order from Dell Home (better prices usually).

No kidding, my new e1405 came with enough bloatware to bog down five systems.

Dell cripples their systems before they ever leave the warehouse.

As was mentioned earlier, best move is to format and reinstall from OS disc.

My new E1405 didn't come with an OS disk. Could I just ask for one?

Thanks dotcommie!

Now to wait 3-5 days for the OS CD, and erase all of the dell crap

Hmm, I wonder what Dell files I need to use the media buttons.

Check out notebookforums.com for more info on those. It may be like some multimedia keyboards where the hotkeys are able to run directly from the OS. Though, you may have to install some Dell media program, I think Dell Media Direct (or something like that).

Before turning on for first time, I took out the 2.5" hard drive and connect it to my desktop pc. Then use Ghost to image the ENTIRE hard drive onto a DVD with maximum compression. Insert the hard drive back to laptop then test image. Works fine. Take out the OEM Windows and reinstall (delete all of those diagnostic and recovery partitions). Now if I need to resell it, I can ghost the factory installation with those diagnostic and recovery partitions intack.
