Removing an aftermarket pushpin properly?

This is probably bordering on a silly question, but I just want to be sure: how do I remove a pushpin for an aftermarket cooler? I have this Cooler Master Vortex Plus cooler, and for reasons I won't get into here, I have to remove one of the pushpins. They are pictured here (black parts, on the right):

Pulling them out seems a bit forced to say the least.

flathead driver... allign in groves... twist in direction arrow points.. then pull up... pull the black part back up.... twist back so it can relock when you push down again.

I've never removed a push pin without breaking it. =( They are stupid anyway.
I don't care if I break them, given they were defective to begin with (I ordered replacements - I just want to remove these ones without damaging the motherboard).
