Removing a Taisol CGK w/phase change material.

Ok,

My processor and MB got here a couple of days early. So, of course, like any good geek, I am anxious to rip into them and get my system running. My question is that I haven't gotten any defogger kit yet, and don't think I'll have time to stop tonight and get any. If I install the processor into the MB, then slap a taisol on top with the phase change material (thermal pad, if you want) in place, will I be able to remove the HSF this weekend, then put it back on with the thermal "pad" again once I have unlocked my processor?

I have heatsink grease, I don't want to use it, I hear the Taisol phase change material is good, so I'd like to stick with that.

Well if you plan on turning on the comp. realize that it will turn to goop when heated and stick to the chip. If you just install it without turning it on then you will mess up its adhesive property. either way it should be a no go for you. First unlock the chip then stick it on and go from there.

That's kinda what I figured. :( Guess I'll either have to find some defogger kit tonight or wait until the weekend. Thanks.

Use a pencil to unlock it. No extra materials necessary and cheap;) That's what I did and it works great. I don't see the reason for using anything else unless the chip gets handled alot which it dosen't sound like you'd be doing.

Well, I thought about a pencil. My only concern was if the pencil "wears off" in a couple of months. If my, hell no you aren't going to overclock this system, wife goes to boot the system and it won't boot because of the pencil wearing out, well, let's just say it won't be pretty. ;) Plus, then you gotta worry about what type of pencil to use. I've heard all of the following work best: .5 mm mechanical, Dixon Ticonderoga, 6H, HB, 6B.

I don't know what to choose. I think if I was going to do it, I would either go with the mechanical or 6B.

I used a standard #2 mechanical pencil that I had laying around somewhere. I don't think wearing off is a problem unless, as I stated before, the chip will be moved from PC to PC. I have had my Duron 600 "pencilized" for going on 6 or 7 months or so without any problem. Plus, I swapped the HSF a couple of times along the way. I think I saw a post recently with a question like "how long have you had your CPU unlocked via the pencil trick without any problems". Maybe do a search for that to see some others who have had the same success.

But I understand you don't want to be in doghouse with the wife if some day down the line it wears off. I feel your pain! ;)

Flyers,

Found the thread you were talking about. After thinking about it, I don't think I could have the boxes staring me in the face for 3 days and do nothing about it. I walked across the street to the drug store and got a nice metal pen/pencil set for $2. Looks like it's #2 for me all the way. :) I figure I won't be messing around with this thing too much after it gets running, and if in 6-7 months it wears off, it won't be too bad to deal with. Thanks for all the advice.

Actually if in 6-7 months it does wear off. You tell the wife you have to look at it. Pull the processor out. Repencil it. Without her looking. Then reinstall the processor. That way your the hero now!! ehehheheheheeheh

Just tell her it had some dirty filter or something..SHe should believfe that!!!

LOL, actually, that would probably work. :) Plus, she'll be so used to the speed that even if she did notice me penciling, she wouldn't want to not have it...

Ain't life fun.
